Ugh. It's the closest location for most students and the worst location for pedestrians. The north entrance forces anyone east of Allen to walk directly through a windy no-sidewalk dedicated car's alley to get groceries and medicine. Compared to the Sobeys north of the Commons, produce is less fresh and more expensive. If you ever wanted to see the pattern of business investment privileging prosperity, compare the experience of going to this superstore with most others in HRM.

  • I have been going to this location way back when it was an IGA in the 1990's, and I can't lay a complaint. Most of the problems people have brought up centre around two things: no plastic bags and lack of selection. Regarding the bags, it is CLEARLY indicated on the outside of the store that they don't have them. I think going bagless is an environmental plus and deserves some kudos. In the worst case scenario you buy a reusable bag and take it back the next time, assuming you're walking. (And I have seen more than one person grab a few produce bags to put their stuff in if they forgot their reusables, or didn't know about 'no the plastic bags on site', despite the big sign. You're hardly left stranded with an arm full of groceries with no possible way of getting it home.) If you're driving, you can still get the food in your trunk and into your home. Annoying maybe, but a small price to pay to put a little less plastic in the world. Just make a note to self to bring bags the next time. As far as selection goes, I don't think anyone has actually paid any attention to the square footage of the place. This location would never be able to fit more in, much less develop any sort of specialty for people who want a broad range of vegan or gluten free etc, or have a top notch butcher or baker or fish monger. This store was built before the "industrial complex grocery store" era. and there is no room for expansion. Expecting this store to put on the shelves what other Superstores do at other locations is ludicrous. This is a small, centrally located grocery store. You simply cannot get a sprawling selection of everything, but you can get what you need plus a lot. It is a bit of a "locals" store (heaven forbid) but I like that. It means that I, like hundreds of other people in my area, can walk there in 15 minutes or less. One more thing, in the same complex is a Canadian Tire, an NSLC, and a Shoppers Drug Mart. I don't think you're hurtin' for selection of what you need if you're willing to, OMG, move one store over. You could also stop at the Scotiabank, or the ice cream shop, or the Wendy's, or the use the post office located inside the Superstore.
